The newer model version design appear similar, with temperature selection and timer knobs on top, as with the handle and base that holds the cooking bowl. The heating element that is on top of bowl is steel. Quite pleased with the prior model version of this product (which has been in use for over 8 years) and would expect that this newer model version would be as good.
